     The Four Way Test
Of the things we think, say, or do:
            First, Is it the truth?
Second, Is it fair to all concerned?
Third, Will it build goodwill & better friendships?
Fourth, Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Upcoming Opportunities
Polio Plus – Please give generously to our cans thru June. As we approach the end of this Rotary year, let’s not forget that the fight to end polio continues. Polio cases are down year-to-date over last year with 3 cases in Afghanistan and 2 cases in Pakistan. With double matching help from the Gates Foundation, we will lick this disease. Our Polio Plus cans will be emptied after our meeting on June 20 so funds can be submitted prior to year-end.

Westbrook Middle School – Rotary Service Award – Wednesday June 21 6PM - WG Rotary will be presenting the Annual Rotary Service Award to a boy and girl from the graduating 8th grade class who best exemplify the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” as voted by the WMS faculty.  As part of this year’s presentation to the students, we will also be presenting a new plague to the school.  All members are welcome to attend.

Summer Lunch Program Kick-Off Event – June 30, Walker Field 3-5PM, 3 volunteers needed. This event is designed to make sure that the community is aware of the program and the feeding sites and to have some fun. Walker Field is off Brown St near St Anthony’s (St Hyacinth’s). Ronald MacDonald House - Ongoing - Pat and Cliff Plummer are back and collecting can tabs for RMH. Aluminum can tabs from beverage cans, pet food cans, tuna cans, etc, all are worth money in quantity. Please consider saving your aluminum tabs over the summer and bringing them to a future meeting. The Plummers have been working on this project for quite some time and would appreciate our help this year.

Donate to our Club's Charity through Amazon Smile – Ongoing - If you order items from Amazon.com, even if not very often, you can help Westbrook Gorham Rotary Club Charities.  Go to http://smile.amazon.com/. Search for our Charity and select it. You may need to login to your Amazon account before being able to finalize your selection.   Then, when you shop Amazon.com (always starting from http://smile.amazon.com/) a portion of every purchase will be donated to our charity.

CLYNK for Literacy – Ongoing - Keep those cans and bottles coming! Drop off your filled CLYNK bag at any Hannaford. Thanks to those who have contributed bottles so far to help purchase books that we donate for each speaker.  If you need more CLYNK bags, they are available at each meeting.

Stillwater Presidential Award
Congratulations to Henry Saunders. He was honored by the University of Maine with the 2017 Stillwater Presidential Award. The celebration took place at the Wells Conference Center on the UMaine campus in Orono on Saturday night June 3. Each year, the Stillwater Society honors key supporters of UMaine.  Past recipients have included Sen Olympia Snow, Sen Susan Collins, Harold Alfond, among other business leaders and philanthropists.  He was introduced by Dr. Dana Humphrey, Dean of the College of Engineering.

Henry graduated from UMaine in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was commissioned in the US Army Corp of Engineers, and was honorably discharged as a Captain. He began working at Saunders Brothers in 1950 and retired as chairman in 1986. He and his daughter Leslie recently endowed three faculty positions at UMaine, one named for his late son Kenneth in Engineering Leadership and Management, one in Forestry, and one named for his late wife Marjorie and daughter Leslie McManus in the Maine Business School. The latter is – to date – the only endowed position at UMaine named in honor of women.

Henry has been a member of Westbrook-Gorham Rotary for 50 years. In attendance were fellow Rotarians Bruce Saunders, Dan Willett, Woody Beach, and Christine Born Johnson, as well as former WG Rotarian Walt Stinson.  Also there to cheer on Henry were several members of his family pictured below.

Fundraiser at BreaLu – Fun and Delicious
A nice crowd of folks enjoyed a spaghetti feast at BreaLu Café on Thursday June 1. The crowd also enjoyed selections from our own local brewery Mast Landing and delectable chocolates from Black Dinah Chocolatiers.  Music was provided by Midnight Blues Quartet, a Westbrook-based jazz quartet.

A huge thanks to proprietor and chef Christian DeLuca and his wife Anna for opening their restaurant and allowing all proceeds to benefit the Downtown Westbrook Coalition.  DWC Director Abigail Cioffi had help from Becky Albert, Deb Shangraw and Phil Spiller, among others, in hosting this event.

The Downtown Westbrook Coalition’s mission is to make our downtown a walkable, livable, thriving destination. They support sustainable economic vitality in Westbrook's urban core by promoting and attracting businesses and events.
Gorham High School Most Improved Student
Jason was pleased to award the Westbrook Gorham Rotary Most Improved Student scholarship to Jordyn Falagario, who plans to attend Roger Williams University and major in Bio engineering. Jordyn will receive $500 to apply to her second semester tuition once she has successfully completed her first semester of college.  GHS Awards Night was held on Wednesday May 31.
Visit Portland
We had a great speaker on May 30 for our weekly Westbrook-Gorham Rotary luncheon - Vanessa Pike of Visit Portland (formerly Greater-Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau). Visit Portland is the destination marketing organization for greater Portland.  They are a non-profit organization that is funded by their members – 450 and growing. No taxpayer dollars are used. The name-change from CVB to Visit Portland was designed to simplify their name and their message, and bring people to the region.

Vanessa spoke of regional and national trends, the strengths of the Greater Portland region and specifically the applicability of the Visit Portland organization to the Westbrook and Gorham area.  Visit Portland has defined market segments to target and attract, working with the Maine Tourism Bureau. They produce a variety of guides including ones targeted to event planners and to specific market segments and they conduct e-mail marketing campaigns to leisure travelers who have signed up to receive correspondence.  They do cooperative advertising -  buy advertising in bulk to obtain a lower rate, then resell that space to members to save ad dollars. They also have staff who participate in travel and trade shows that attract planners for international travelers. The great news is that we have a high return rate of visitors to our region.

After the meeting, she signed a book for the Walker Library and met with our Westbrook WRVC Culinary Director Chef Charles Limoggio to discuss the shortage of culinary help in the tourist region.

Summer Lunch Program
Barbara Nichols, Director of Food Services for Westbrook Schools, was our guest and speaker on May 23. She spoke about the upcoming summer feeding program for children up to 18 years of age. During the summer of 2016, this program provided 15,000 lunches and 5,000 breakfasts.  They expect to meet or exceed that number in 2017 at the five feeding sites with the help of many volunteers and a few staff members.

The statics for Westbrook are sobering. 64-65% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.  With the percentage of students this high for the community, Westbrook can provide free meals to children all summer long without qualifying each child who comes to be fed.

Meals are prepared at the middle school or the high school by five staff members who work all summer.  The food is then packaged and shipped to each site.  With transportation required, the meals are always cold.  They are similar to meals served during the school year with a vegetable, a whole grain, a fruit, and a lean protein.

To let families and children know about the program, flyers are sent home with kids.  Flyers are also placed in stores and laundromats.  This year the feeding sites will be at: High School, Middle School, Westbrook Point, Intercultural Community Center, and Walker Field. Volunteers are needed at all sites to hand out the meals and will be trained on procedures required to meet Federal guidelines for the program.

To volunteer, contact Barbara at: nicholsb@westbrookschools.org
